To Americans, From Michael Chertoff. The Real ID Will Save the Children.

As I was looking for some more news on the Real ID, I found an article written by, Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security. He is trying to propagandize the reason for the Real Id. With lines like, needing it to pick a babysitter for your children.

Chertoff ask if the documents we use are reliable. He also tries to convince us that the hijackers were some kind of miracle workers.

In the last point he says, 28% of those incidents (likely) required drivers license. Think about it, once the thief gets the persons Real ID number, on the computer it will be just like using a driver license. The whole of this article is meant to get the people pushing for their state government to begin printing the Real ID, by instilling fear in them.

DPS offices will be required to protect their own operations from identity theft and other nefarious activities. States must issue new, REAL ID licenses that will be tougher to counterfeit or tamper with. They must work together to prevent individuals from receiving driver’s licenses from multiple states.

In the above paragraph it is pointed out that the state is responsible for the protection on your information. What he fails to tell the readers is, all the state databases will be linked to the Department of Homeland Security database. All that information in one place for the hackers.

Chertoff mentions that there are critics of the Real ID, and there are states that are against it, but don’t get excited. There are seventeen States fighting the Real ID Act, but not for the reasons you think. The biggest reason is the mandate is under funded, so these states can ask for an extension until 2013. As it stands there will be 33 states with the Real ID, and Pennsylvania is one of the 33. The 17 states that have rejected the ID according to AP

So far, 17 states have passed legislation or resolutions objecting to the REAL ID Act’s provisions, many due to concerns it will cost them too much to comply. The 17, according to the ACLU, are Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington.

I guess I can have a One-Man protest, and not get the Real ID, however I will not be able to drive, do any banking, apply for a job, or travel outside of my state.
