A Country Broken

July 13, 2008

As we sit back and complain about that which is going on around us, Let it be noted, it is because of what we have done, or should I say the lack of what has been attempted by us. The government that we let build to the power that it holds, has come to be because of our apathy. Yes, many have spoken, and many more have tried to teach, only to be ridiculed by there brethren. They are slandered because they speak the truth and those who oppose have nothing but insults.

Because of the fear suggested by this administration, the people have allowed themselves to be held in check. Most have shunned the truth so not be labeled as a Conspiracy Theorist, a trader to the country, or Enemy of the State. Why is it so many are afraid to speak out of the injustices that are being brought against fellow citizenry? Is it fear, or the disbelief that it could happen to them? When I ponder on this question, I think of something I heard many times through the years. Its sentiment captures what is beginning to take place today.

‘WHEN THEY CAME FOR ME THERE WAS NO ONE LEFT TO SPEAK OUT’

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.
When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.

Attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)

Since we were children we have been trained to follow the masses, and to scorn those who go against the thoughts of the masses. As long as they conform to the will of authority, (The Government) they are taught that all will be well. The truth of the matter is, the government should be a reflection of its citizenry, instead we find that corporations and the elitist form the government and it laws to fit their wants and needs. Still the people raise no questions, or bring constructive criticism against that which is so blatant. Turning a blind eye to the criminal acts that have happened and still are happening. Most are fooled into believing that the same system that they criticized will bring the change that is desperately needed. Instead of taking action, they lay their lives in the hands of the very thing that brought us to this place in time.

    I wish more would believe, educate and speak out. If we dont stand for something we will fall for anything. Thank you for speaking out. It takes alot of strength and courage. I will speak and i will keep learning. And when the day comes I WILL fight!
