Dem’s Play Scrooge

December 1, 2006

Well here it is 25 days until Christmas and Scrooge has already shown up to put a damper on the works. The newly elected Democratic ruled congress has broken their first promise, and they are not even in power yet. Read on.>>>

According to the Washington Post, the Democratic leaders have decided that they will not place the recommendations of the Bipartisan 9-11 Commission in to affect.

It was a solemn pledge, repeated by Democratic leaders and candidates over and over: If elected to the majority in Congress, Democrats would implement all of the recommendations of the bipartisan commission that examined the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
But with control of Congress now secured, Democratic leaders have decided for now against implementing the one measure that would affect them most directly: a wholesale reorganization of Congress to improve oversight and funding of the nation’s intelligence agencies. Instead, Democratic leaders may create a panel to look at the issue and produce recommendations, according to congressional aides and lawmakers.

Now the big question now becomes; Is this how it is going to be, will the Democratic led congress just pick up where the republicans left off?

It may seem like a minor matter, but members of the commission say Congress’s failure to change itself is anything but inconsequential. In 2004, the commission urged Congress to grant the House and Senate intelligence committees the power not only to oversee the nation’s intelligence agencies but also to fund them and shape intelligence policy.

The decision not to implement the recommendations will definitely dash the hopes of those to whom those promises were made.

The decision will almost certainly anger commission members, as well as families of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, many of whom have pressed hard for implementation of the recommendations.

To me this is a major issue. There needs to be a major Oversight panel to watch what this administration does with the time that is left in its term. This may sound a bit paranoid, but with Iraq in a Civil War, and the rest of the world showing that they have little or no respect for the policies of this country, we could see desperate steps taken by this (P)Resident.

Washington Times

The power of the Bush administration was dealt a blow this week when a Federal Judge ruled that Executive Order 13224 was unconstitutional.

President Bush lacks the constitutional authority to designate groups and persons as terrorists under a post-September 11 executive order, according to a federal judge in Los Angeles.
U.S. District Judge Audrey B. Collins, in a challenge brought by the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Constitutional Rights on behalf of the Humanitarian Law Project, said a Sept. 24, 2001, executive order naming 27 groups and persons as “specially designated global terrorists” (SDGTs) allowed no way for those designated to challenge the ruling.

All that was done was that they were guilty by association. The E.O. gave no definition of a terrorist group and basically did not allow any group or person designated as a terrorist to fight the charge against them.

However, this is not the only Executive Order, or law that has been passed during this (P)Residents rein that is this vague on definitions, or does not allow the accused to fight the charges against them. The latest was the Military Commissions Act 2006 in which we lost the right to Habeas Corpus. The Patriot Act, and all of its revisions, is filled with the same language.

One of the first things that this Upcoming Congress needs to do is review all of the laws that were passed under this administrations rein of power. Because if they don’t the next person to enter the White House may pick up on the unlimited power that this (P)Resident was in the process of giving himself.

Just a hypothetical situation, Newt Gingrich is elected into power; he now has what was left to him by G.W. Bush, to start off his crusade to rip the heart out of the Constitution in the name of fighting terrorist. That would only be the beginning, because we didn’t want to put the nation through an impeachment, and take the time to reverse the laws written.

The one thing we need to be sure that we do is to watch what transpires in the next two years so we don’t get taken for another ride. Because as I said before, this may seem to be a small issue, or it may be the sign of things to come.
